Top UN Representative Holds Talks With NPP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Sri Lanka's Economic and Political Crisis

Marc-Andre Franch, the Permanent Resident Representative of the United Nations, met with Anura Kumara Dissanayake, the Leader of the National People's Power (NPP), at the JVP head office in Colombo. The meeting was convened to address the pressing issues surrounding Sri Lanka's economic crisis and political turmoil.

Accompanying Franch was Edward, the Development Adviser and Resident Coordinator of the UN Sri Lanka Office, while Bimal Rathnayake, a National Executive Member for the National People's Power, joined Dissanayake on the NPP's behalf.

The heart of the discussion revolved around the deepening economic crisis in Sri Lanka and the growing concerns over the state of democracy in the nation. During the meeting, Mr. Dissanayake voiced his strong concerns, stating that the government's failure to achieve its economic objectives was exacerbating the suffering of the people. He further criticized the government for not upholding democratic principles, particularly in the context of not conducting elections, thereby depriving citizens of their democratic rights.

One of the prominent issues highlighted during the talks was the alleged undemocratic actions of the government, including threats to summon judges who ordered elections to the Parliament's Privileges Committee. This action, coupled with the suppression of people's protests, raised serious concerns about the state of democracy and the rule of law in Sri Lanka.
