Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has officially revoked the ban imposed on cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka, following his recent acquittal after a protracted legal battle in Australia over sexual abuse allegations. The decision, announced by the national cricket board's Executive Committee on October 13, comes after a thorough evaluation by an inquiry committee, considering the impact of his acquittal on both his cricketing career and the nation's cricketing ambitions.
The inquiry committee, led by retired High Court Judge Sisira Ratnayake and comprised of Attorneys-at-Law Niroshana Perera and Asela Rekawa was entrusted with investigating the ramifications of the criminal allegations that had arisen during Gunathilaka's time in Australia. The inquiry took into account the legal proceedings in Australia and, upon careful deliberation, recommended the lifting of the ban.
Danushka Gunathilaka, the 32-year-old cricketer, faced the ban in November 2022 after being arrested in Australia following accusations of sexual assault by a Sydney woman. The legal battle that ensued was lengthy and arduous, resulting in his eventual acquittal.
The SLC has expressed its expectation that Gunathilaka will continue to represent the nation with the utmost responsibility and integrity. In a statement, the SLC cautioned the cricketer to "always uphold his status as a representative of the nation in all his future actions." This reinstatement presents a fresh opportunity for Gunathilaka to resume his cricketing career and contribute to the sport he is passionate about.
