Flood Warnings Issued for Several River Basins

The Irrigation Department has issued flood warnings for low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya river basin and the Kuda Ganga sub-basin of the Kalu River, effective until 9:00 p.m. on May 22. The warnings follow considerable rainfall in the upstream catchment areas of these basins as of 9:00 p.m. last night.

Hydrological analyses indicate a potential minor flood situation in the low-lying areas of the Kuda Ganga and Maguru Ganga valleys, affecting the Bulathsinhala, Madurawala, and Palinda Nuwara district secretariat divisions. Roads running through these floodplains are at high risk of inundation.

Similarly, significant rainfall in the catchment areas of the Attanagalu Oya river basin has raised the possibility of flooding in low-lying areas of the Attanagalu Oya and Uruwal Oya valleys. This could impact the Diwulapitiya, Mirigama, Attanagalla, Mahara, Gampaha, Minuwangoda, Ja-Ela, Katana, and Wattala district secretariat divisions within the next 48 hours.
