Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds Expected Over the Island

The Meteorology Department has announced that the Southwest monsoon conditions are gradually establishing over the island, resulting in ongoing showery and windy weather. Most parts of the island will experience cloudy skies, with showers or thundershowers anticipated in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, Southern, and Northern provinces.

Some areas, particularly in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in the Kandy and Nuwara-Eliya districts, are likely to receive very heavy showers of about 150mm. Similarly North-western province and the districts of Mannar, Galle, and Matara could see heavy showers exceeding 100mm.

In addition to rainfall, strong winds are expected, with speeds of 40-50 kmph in the western slope of the central hills and Southern province, and fairly strong winds of 30-40 kmph elsewhere on the island.
