Between March and April 2024, the Sri Lanka High Commission in Malaysia facilitated the repatriation of 1,608 illegal Sri Lankan migrants. This operation was part of the Malaysian Government’s Migrant Repatriation Programme, aimed at assisting illegal immigrants in voluntarily returning to their home countries by providing legal exemptions and financial relief.
In addition to the 1,608 migrants repatriated from March 1 to April 30, 2024, the High Commission had previously helped repatriate 124 Sri Lankans from January 1 to February 28, 2024. This brings the total number of repatriations this year to 1,732.
The High Commission's efforts included processing applications, issuing necessary travel documents, and coordinating with Malaysian authorities to ensure a smooth and efficient return process. Special attention was given to vulnerable groups, such as the elderly, pregnant women, individuals needing medical assistance, and children under twelve.
