SLPP Alleges ‘Diaspora Conspiracy’ in Removal of MR's Security Detail

Attorney-at-Law Manoj Gamage claimed today (31 October) that the recent reduction in former President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s security detail is a deliberate conspiracy, demanding that the reduction be reversed.

At a media briefing, Gamage stated that orders were given to remove Rajapaksa’s security guards within two days, leaving only two vehicles and a three-wheeler assigned for his protection.

Gamage emphasized Mahinda Rajapaksa’s role in eradicating terrorism from Sri Lanka and restoring peace. “President Anura Kumara Dissanayake seems to have forgotten these facts. First, he reduced the number of vehicles, and now he has reduced the security personnel. I don’t understand who they are trying to please with these actions,” he stated.

He also linked this decision to the recent Arugam Bay incident, arguing that such events highlight a potential threat to national security. “When security is critical, reducing Mahinda Rajapaksa’s protection in this disgraceful way is unacceptable,” Gamage asserted, noting that security at Temple Trees has also been scaled back recently.

Gamage raised concerns about the resources provided for Rajapaksa's security, mentioning that two jeeps, two motorcycles, and a three-wheeler are currently assigned. "Only twenty people have been assigned for the security of Mahinda Rajapaksa. Is a three-wheeler supposed to ensure his safety?” He claimed if this reduction was in favor of individuals in the LTTE diaspora, alleging that recent support for the National People's Power (NPP) political meetings in Canada had held from the support of diaspora groups.

He further cautioned, “If an incident occurs within even a mile of Mahinda Rajapaksa, this government will be held accountable.” Rajapaksa faces one of the highest threat levels in the country and labeled the reduction of his security a "conspiracy,” he said.
