The Sri Lanka National Hydrographic Office (SLNHO) has marked a significant milestone with the publication of its first Electronic Navigation Chart (ENC) for Galle Harbour, released on October 31, 2024. This follows the establishment of the SLNHO and aligns with the National Hydrographic Act No: 7, 2024.
The new ENC replaces an outdated chart produced by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office, which contained data as old as 1907 and was classified as having low accuracy. The introduction of this updated chart is expected to enhance maritime safety and boost the confidence of mariners, adhering to the standards set by the SOLAS Convention 1979.
Designated as LK ENC series No: LK5G04A1, the digital chart serves as an alternative to traditional paper nautical charts, facilitating safer navigation for vessels. The SLNHO aims to generate foreign exchange through this initiative, with an annual subscription fee of USD 25 per user.
This development is part of SLNHO's broader plan to produce ENCs, initially focusing on harbors and their approaches. With around 40,000 ships reported to have navigated the southern waters off Sri Lanka in 2023, the SLNHO is now looking to expand its efforts to cover deeper waters surrounding the island.
