Janata Vimukti Peramuna (JVP), a core partner of the National People's Power (NPP), has flatly ruled out forming a coalition or a national government after the upcoming general elections.
General Secretary of Janatha Vimukti Peramuna Mr. Tilvin Silva said that it will be possible to get a clear majority in the elections held on November 14, making coalition rule unnecessary. Responding to reports that some parties in the North are planning to join forces with the NPP for a post-election coalition, he said the NPP is open to talks but will not form alliances with parties that were part of previous governments.
"We will not allow those responsible for the failures of previous administrations,"
He said the NPP aspires to form an independent government with a clear focus on its own policies and vision.
Under Sri Lanka's parliamentary system, any party that gets more than 113 seats in the 225-member parliament can form a government. A two-thirds vote is required only for constitutional amendments and special legislation.
