The Supreme Court issued an Interim Injunction today (18) preventing the release of the results of the 2024 Grade Five Scholarship Examination following a fundamental rights (FR) petition filed by a group of parents.
The petition, submitted on 15 October, was brought by 54 individuals. The Commissioner General of Examinations, Amith Jayasundara, and the Prime Minister were named as respondents.
The petitioners sought the court’s intervention after a scandal involving leaked exam questions emerged. Three questions from the paper were leaked, prompting public outrage. The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) launched an investigation, resulting in the arrest of the Director of the National Institute of Education (NIE) and a tuition teacher linked to the leak.
Despite the controversy, the Commissioner General of Examinations announced that the exam would not be re-conducted. Instead, students were to be awarded free marks for the three compromised questions.
