The deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, located 100 km northeast of Trincomalee this morning, is expected to move slowly north-northwest and intensify into a cyclonic storm later today, according to the Meteorology Department.
Island-wide Weather Forecast:
- Very heavy showers and strong winds are forecasted in the Northern and North-western provinces and Trincomalee district, with rainfall exceeding 150 mm in some areas.
- Heavy showers above 100 mm are expected in parts of the North Central and North-western provinces, as well as Matale and Kegalle districts.
- Showers and thundershowers will occur at times across the rest of the island.
Sea Area Warnings:
- Deep and shallow sea areas around Sri Lanka are predicted to be rough to very rough, with wind speeds reaching 60-70 kmph.
- Swell waves of 2.5–3.0 m are expected off the coast from Batticaloa to Kankasanthurai via Trincomalee, posing risks of surges in near-shore areas.
- Naval and fishing communities are strongly advised against venturing into these waters until further notice.
