Popular artist Iraj Weeraratne, known for his support of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), participated in a small protest at the Polduwa Junction near Parliament in Battaramulla this afternoon (3 December).
The demonstration, involving fewer than 20 participants, was sparked by recent arrests over allegations of inciting racism and violence through social media. The accusations included sharing photos of LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, promoting proscribed symbols, and spreading manipulated information related to Maaveerar Naal.
Protesters carried placards with slogans such as "We Are Against Hunting Social Media Activists" and "Is the Government Afraid of Social Media Activists?"
Later, MPs Premanath Dolawatta and Madhura Withanage also took part in the demonstration. They alleged that the Government is violating fundemental rights and the freedom of speech of the public.
