NDF Contesting For General Election

New Democratic Party Secretary Shamila Perera stated that the party will contest the forthcoming general election under the symbol of 'Swan'.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, Perera stated that the decision was conveyed to the Elections Commissioner.

Certain reports indicated that the NDF was being considered as a platform to establish an anti-Rajapaksa alliance.

Several weeks earlier, the UNP was also considering using the Swan as the symbol of a broad alliance it was forming for the election. However, the UNP later decided to contest under its own name and symbol.

In 2010 Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka campaigned for the presidential election under the sign of 'swan'

President Maithripala Sirisena also contested for the presidential election in 2015 under the ticket of NDF and recieved 6.2 million votes.

This will be the first general election for the NDF.
