Eelam People's Democratic Party led by Douglas Devananda has decided to contest the August 17 election alone.

Party leader Douglas Devananda stated this yesterday in Jaffna. The EPDP is expected to contest in electoral districts in the north.

EPDP contested the 2010 Parliamentary Election as part of the UPFA.

The EPDP has reportedly suffered a loss of popularity in its stronghold in Kayts following the recent rape and murder of a schoolgirl in the area. The main suspect in the crime had connections to the party.
