President Maithripala Sirisena is likely to make a special announcement on the general election and granting of nominations to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, BBC Sandeshaya reported.
The nomination period ends at mid-day on Monday.
Granting nomination to Rajapaksa has created significant controversy in political circles, especially within the United People's Freedom Alliance. A prominent group including Rajitha Senaratne, Arjuna Ranatunga and Patali Champika Ranawaka are now expected to contest the election with the United National Party.
The UNP has decided to take more time in finalizing the nominations due to the latest developments.
