The Department of Irrigation has warned that major flooding could occur along the Kelani River basin over the next 24 hours following heavy rainfall in the upper and middle catchment areas.
In a statement, the department said persistent heavy rainfall has been recorded across the Kelani River basin and, with wet weather conditions continuing, major flooding is likely in low-lying areas of the Dehiowita, Ruwanwella and Yatiyanthota Divisional Secretariat divisions.
The department also warned that water levels in the Kelani River could rise rapidly and urged residents living in low-lying areas along the river, as well as motorists travelling through the affected areas, to remain vigilant and exercise extreme caution.
