Archbishop of Colombo His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith has said that religion holds only a limited place in human society today.

Speaking at the 150th Jubilee Vespers Service of the Divine Saviour Church in Makewita, Cardinal Ranjith observed that in many developed countries, people no longer attend churches on weekends and instead spend their time engaging in various forms of entertainment.

He said that basilicas across Europe were becoming increasingly empty, while people gathered in large numbers at football stadiums.

Cardinal Ranjith further said that societies that considered themselves developed were increasingly displaying undesirable characteristics, with people forgetting the noble values of humanity and focusing more on their physical and material needs.
