A dispute between Nuwara Eliya District Organiser of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), Nimal Piyatissa, and Kotmale Electorate Organiser Parakrama Dasanayake escalated into a physical altercation during a party meeting in Dickoya yesterday (18).
The incident occurred at a private function hall where a party meeting was scheduled to be held.
Commenting on the incident, Dasanayake said Piyatissa had organised a party meeting in the Kotmale electorate at around 2.00 p.m. without informing him. He stated that a verbal dispute broke out when he visited the venue to inquire about the meeting, subsequently escalating into a physical confrontation.
Dasanayake further claimed that Piyatissa left the venue without conducting the meeting. He added that he intended to inform the party’s General Secretary about the incident, citing concerns over the organisation of a meeting within his electorate without his knowledge.
However, Piyatissa presented a different account of the incident, stating that he had been conducting a series of meetings across the district in preparation for the upcoming SLPP Nuwara Eliya District Convention.
He alleged that Dasanayake arrived at the venue with a group of people and disrupted the scheduled meeting. Piyatissa further claimed that he and his supporters had assaulted the group and driven them away.
Both organisers have therefore levelled allegations against each other over the incident.
