The Financial Crimes Investigation Department (FCID) has launched an extensive investigation into the alleged misuse of Rs. 10 million provided by the National Savings Bank (NSB) to the Siriliya Saviya Foundation to purchase a CT scanner for the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.

Officers of the CID’s Financial Crimes Investigation Division are conducting the investigation under the guidance of Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who is supervising the matter on behalf of the Attorney General’s Department.

Investigators are preparing to question officials of the Siriliya Saviya Foundation, which was chaired by former First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa, as well as NSB officials.

Preliminary investigations have reportedly revealed that a CT scanner provided to Sri Lanka by the Chinese Government under a loan facility was handed over to the hospital as a donation from the Siriliya Saviya Foundation.

Investigators suspect that the Rs. 10 million donated by the NSB to the Foundation for the purchase of a CT scanner was not used for its intended purpose and may have been misappropriated.

The investigation focuses on members of the Siriliya Saviya Foundation, including Shiranthi Rajapaksa, and other parties linked to the transaction.
