The Colombo Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant for the arrest of former Minister Wimal Weerawansa after he failed to appear before court in a case relating to a protest held outside the United Nations office in Colombo in 2016.
Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama issued the warrant ordering that Weerawansa be arrested and produced before court.
The case relates to a protest staged near the UN office in Thummulla, Colombo, during the 2016 visit of then UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Prince Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein.
The case was filed by the Cinnamon Gardens Police over allegations that roads near the UN office were obstructed during the protest, causing inconvenience to the public and disrupting traffic.
Police have accused the suspects of violating provisions of the Police Ordinance and laws relating to public roads.
