Motion to Remove IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon to Be Tabled and Debated in Parliament Next Month

Cabinet Spokesperson, Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa today (26 March) announced that the motion to remove Inspector General of Police (IGP) Deshabandu Tennakoon will be presented to Parliament on either 8 or 9 April.

He was responding to the questions of the journalists during the weekly Cabinet media briefing.

The proposal, submitted by the National People’s Power (NPP) Parliamentary Group, has been signed by 115 MPs and was handed over to the Speaker on 25 March. It is expected to receive parliamentary approval.

Deputy Minister Eranga Gunasekara stated that the NPP has consistently opposed Tennakoon’s appointment, even before assuming office.

The motion for his removal has been brought under Section 5 of the Removal of Officers (Procedure) Act No. 5 of 2002.
