The Police have issued a statement confirming that former MP and National Freedom Front leader Wimal Weerawansa appeared before the Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit regarding a remark he had made about an arrested individual known as Beliatte Sanaa or Puwakdandawe Sanaa.
According to the statement, the investigation was initiated over comments made by Weerawansa concerning the suspect arrested by the Tangalle Division related to drug trafficking, prompting police to obtain a statement from him.
During the questioning, Weerawansa reportedly told police the following:
- He has never met or seen Sarath Weerasinghe, also known as Beliatte Sanaa or Puwakdandawe Sanaa, nor has he ever identified him as an active member of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP).
- His statement that drug trafficking and raids occur with state backing was made as a general observation about the prevailing situation, not in connection with this particular case.
- His claim that Beliatte Sana was the owner of the boat used to transport narcotics was based on reports previously revealed by the media.
- He had learned that during the last local government election period, when the President visited the area, he had not dined at Beliatte Sanaa’s house but rather at a nearby hotel.
- His belief that the delay in arresting Beliatte Sanaa was due to possible state intervention was based on his personal assumption.
The police further stated that during his statement given on 9 October, Weerawansa did not provide any evidence to substantiate the claims he had made at the media briefing held on 2 October 2025.
Accordingly, the statement noted that if any individual knowingly makes or spreads information that is false or believed to be false, such conduct will be reported to the judiciary for further legal action.
The Tangalle Divisional Crime Investigation Unit is continuing further investigations into the matter.
Sanath Weerasinghe is currently in detention in connection with a large-scale drug trafficking operation recently uncovered in Seenimodara in Tangalle.
