The Election Commission has informed that it cannot recognise the recent constitutional amendments and appointments of new office-bearers of the Abhinava Nidahas Peramuna (ANP), led by controversial figure Amith Weerasinghe.

The decision follows the party’s failure to conduct its annual general meeting in accordance with its constitution.

The Election Commission has conveyed this position in writing to the Secretary of the Abhinava Nidahas Peramuna.

Accordingly, the Commission has instructed the party to convene its annual general meeting in compliance with its constitution and to submit the relevant documents without delay.

The letter further emphasises that the party has not properly submitted required documentation to the Election Commission in line with the Parliamentary Elections Act.

Amith Weerasinghe previously known as the leader of ‘Mahasohon Balakaya’ has been arrested and remanded multiple times on charges related to inciting communal tensions and disrupting peace. Notably, he was arrested following the 2018 Digana unrest in Kandy and the 2019 riots in Kuliyapitiya and Minuwangoda.
