Thurstan College produced a stunning performance to upset S. Thomas’ College 27-24 in their opening match of the Dialog Schools Rugby League Tournament played at the Air Force Grounds in Ratmalana yesterday.

Thurstan dominated large periods of the contest and held a deserved 15-10 lead at half-time after an energetic first-half display.

They raced ahead early with two quick tries and extended their advantage with another unconverted effort before the Thomians responded with two tries of their own to stay within touching distance.

Thurstan continued their momentum after the break, crossing first in the second half to stretch the lead to 20-10.

However, the Thomians fought back strongly and struck with two successive converted tries to move in front 24-20, setting up a tense finish.

With the match slipping away, Thurstan mounted one final attack and crossed for a late try in the dying moments. The successful conversion sealed a memorable 27-24 victory.

Thurstan scored one converted try and four unconverted tries, while S. Thomas’ replied with two converted tries and two unconverted tries in a closely fought encounter.
