The Malwathu Maha Viharaya has announced the temporary suspension of the duties and administrative powers of the Nuwara Kalaviya Chief Sanghanayaka post held by Pallegama Hemarathana Thera.

In a statement issued today (30), the Malwathu Chapter said the decision was taken by the Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha following recent developments surrounding the chief prelate, with regard to a child abuse case.

Accordingly, the administrative authority and responsibilities attached to the position have been suspended until further notice.

The statement further noted that the Chief Incumbent of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, Eethalawetunawewe Gnanathillaka Thera, has been appointed to oversee the administration and religious affairs related to the post during the interim period.

The Malwathu Chapter said the decision was taken in order to safeguard the reputation of the Maha Viharaya tradition and maintain the proper administration of the sacred site.
