A Sri Lankan youth with no proper travel documents and who attempted to clandestinely take a boat from here to the island’s north-east, has been arrested by the Mandapam police near here.
The 27-year-old Muslim youth from the island’s Ampari district, Abdul Huk, was waiting at the Mandapam shore for the boat to arrive after having made arrangements for ‘illegal transit’ through a local agent, when he was nabbed by the police party acting on a tip-off, police sources said.
Abdul Huq reportedly traveled on a Sri Lankan passport to reach the Indian shores back in 2012, sources said. He then underwent training in an Islamic school at Kadayanallur in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district and subsequently had been staying in Pudukkottai district.
On hearing of his mother’s death, Abdul Huq wanted to go to Sri Lanka, but was constrained by his passport’s validity date having expired. “Hence, he planned to take a clandestine ferry service for which he came to Mandapam and had paid an agent Rs 37,000 for the trip,” sources said.
