A tense situation occurred in Kalmunai last Sunday when former Opposition Leader of Kalmunai Municipal Council Henry Mahendran demolished a plaque a short while after it was unveiled.

 

The plaque had been erected to mark the renaming of a road in the name of Gate Mudliyar MS Kariyappar, a former parliamentarian from Kalmunai.

 

Mahendran destroyed it on the same day it was to be opened Eastern Province Chief Minister Hafeez Nazeer at a ceremony participated by Kalmunai Mayor Nizam kariyapper

 

Some Tamils in Kalmunai have opposed naming the road. Mahendran has demanded the road to be named as Tamil United Square (Tamil Aikkiya Sathukkam).

 

Mahendran is a member of TELO, a constituent party of the TNA.
