Lalkantha Says He Resigned From Western Provincial Council On August 10

Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna Politburo Member K.D. Lalkantha refuted rumors that he resigned from the Western Provincial Council due to an internal party crisis.

Speaking to Asian Mirror, he said that he submitted the resignation on August 10 but no public announcement was made until today.

Lalkantha said that he resigned in order to engage in important tasks and responsibilities delegated by the party. He said that there was a common task of defeating Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family rule. He argued that the most important tasks began after the defeat of Rajapaksa.

The next task of the JVP is to achieve social reform, and it needs the mobilization of different social forces, Lalkantha said, pointing out that he is entering national politics to mobilize these forces.

Lalkantha said that he would not be able to do justice to the district and the province if he continues to be a Western Provincial Council member. Therefore, he decided to give the opportunity to another party member, he said.

Meanwhile, he said that there was no dispute over the appointment of national list MPs. The party took the best decision on the matter, he said.
