JVP National List: Chrishmal Warnasuriya Hits Back At Anura Dissanayake

Prominent lawyer Chrishmal Warnasuriya expressed his frustration at the decision taken by the JVP to appoint a losing candidate through the national list.

Warnasuriya was listed at number 2 in the national list submitted to the Elections Commissioner in July. The JVP's decision to appoint Sunil Handunnetti through the national list deprived Warnasuriya of a parliamentary seat.

Updating a status on his Facebook profile, Warnasuriya addressed party leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake and said that he was forced into a difficult position by the decision of the party.

"I sincerely hope that you had a REASON for doing what you just did, I am deeply perplexed as none have been explained to me! However, now that you have taken this step, I will expect you to appreciate that I too will have to EXPLAIN all of this to the many who supported us, and who are now inquiring of me - WHY?" Warnasuriya said.

However, speaking to Asian Mirror earlier today, JVP National Organiser Bimal Rathnayake said that the decision was taken following strong demands from party members and individuals in the national list. Many national list members also supported the idea of appointing a party member as a national list MP, Rathnayake claimed.

He also added that there was no dispute within the party on the matter.

However, Warnasuriya's outburst on Facebook stands contrary to Rathnayake's claim.
