September 01, 2017

Mocked Sri Lankan cosplayer Amaya Suriyapperuma says Facebook needs Sinhala-speaking moderators to monitor online bullying.

Suriyapperuma and gal pal Seshani Cooray were subject to ridicule for cosplaying Wonder Woman at the Asus Sri Lanka Comic Con 2017.

But the two girls won the support of Wonder Woman actress Gal Gadot and director Patty Jenkins who tweeted support and encouragement.

The girls said they had countered the bullying by focusing their energies on reporting the pages that had subject them to ridicule and body shaming.

But cosplayer Amaya Suriyapperuma said Facebook needs Sinhala-speaking moderators to monitor the scale of online bullying in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka is a South Asian country on the tip of the Indian peninsula, home to diverse ethic groups of which the majority is Sinhalese.
