Former Minister Arjuna Ranatunga has been given a written notice by Sudath Chandrasekara, Senior Advisor to the Minister of Sports, to resign immediately from the post of Chairman of the National Sports Council.
Ranatunga was appointed the Head of the Sports Council given his track record as the Captain of the World Cup winning cricket team in 1996 and as a former cricket administrator.
It is reported that the relevant notification was made yesterday (29).
Although the National Sports Council was scheduled to meet at 2.00 pm yesterday, it is stated that none of the members of the National Sports Council have participated in the meeting.
Chandrasekera, in his letter, said that the members did not attend the meeting as they no longer accepted Ranatunga as the Chairman of the body.
Ranatunga is considered to be a controversial figure given his bold views about cricket administration and the conduct of national cricketers.
