CID’s Computer Crime Investigation Division Becoming Sri Lanka’s “Cultural Police”? 6 Youth Arrested for Promoting Alcohol in TikTok Video

The Computer Crime Investigation Division took swift action today, arresting six young individuals involved in the creation and dissemination of a TikTok video showcasing an alcohol festival held during Poson Poho. The suspects, aged between 20 and 25 and residing in Katunayake, were charged with promoting alcohol and alcohol-related activities.

Following the viral circulation of the video on various social media platforms, the Inspector General of Police referred the matter to the Computer Crime Investigation Division for a thorough investigation. Subsequently, the aforementioned division summoned the six youths, who voluntarily presented themselves today to provide detailed statements concerning the incident.

During questioning, the suspects admitted to filling bottles of imported liquor with tea water, intending to produce a video for dissemination on TikTok. The investigating officers promptly took the six individuals into custody this afternoon under charges of advertising alcohol, a violation of the Tobacco and Alcohol Act. They were subsequently brought before the Colombo Magistrate's Court for further legal proceedings.
