Four youths have been apprehended by Aladeniya Police on suspicion of attempting to abduct a 16-year-old schoolgirl after her G.C.E. Ordinary Level examination. The swift response from law enforcement came after a three-wheeler driver alerted authorities via the ‘119’ police emergency hotline, leading to the arrest of the suspects and the van allegedly involved within an hour.
According to police reports, one of the detained individuals, a former army soldier from Avissawella, had developed a relationship with the teenage girl, despite being married. The suspect and his associates had reportedly orchestrated the abduction, utilizing a hired van for their plan.
Investigations reveal that the relationship commenced during the suspect's visits to the girl’s brother, also a soldier, at his Polonnaruwa residence. Upon knowing of the suspect's marital status, the girl ended the relationship, prompting continuous threats from him. Concerned for their daughter’s safety, the girl's parents relocated her to a residence in the Kulugammana area.
The attempted abduction transpired as the student was returning home after completing her examination. Aladeniya Police are actively pursuing further investigations.
