The Ministry of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Aviation has officially announced the calling of tenders for the construction of a second passenger terminal at Katunayake International Airport.
K.D.S. Ruwanchandra, Secretary of the Ministry, confirmed that the project will be financed through loans from Japan.
Originally slated for construction in 2019, the terminal faced delays due to the economic crisis. Once completed, the new terminal is expected to handle an additional 9 million passengers annually, boosting the airport's overall capacity from 6 million to 15 million passengers per year.
