Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has called for an immediate audit of the Ministry of Sports’ financial allocations, stressing the need for transparency and accountability. While expenditure statistics are available, there has been no assessment of the actual progress achieved through these funds.
During a meeting with heads of institutions under the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, the Prime Minister outlined her priorities and expressed concerns about the ministry's management of public funds. She emphasized the importance of reducing unnecessary spending, particularly on festivals and celebrations that lack public value.
Dr. Amarasuriya highlighted the absence of institutional committees to investigate fraud and corruption in government bodies, noting that a structured program is being developed to address these issues. She also pointed out the need for a dedicated program to prevent and respond to abuse and violence within the sports sector.
The meeting included Prime Minister’s Secretary Mr. Pradeep Saputantri and Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs Mr. K. Maheshan, among other senior officials.
