On September 27, 2024, the ashes of Lieutenant Norman Schofield, a Royal Navy officer, and his late wife, Mrs. Marian Schofield, were scattered at sea near Ostenburg Point in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka. The event was conducted with full naval honors, honoring the officer’s wishes following his passing in 1999.
Lieutenant Schofield served as a communication officer at the HMS Highflyer naval base in Trincomalee between 1956 and 1958, a significant base during that era. His ashes were to be scattered in accordance with naval traditions, a practice that had faced complications in recent years.
The ceremony was facilitated by a special request from Colonel Darren Woods, the Defence Adviser of the British High Commission in Sri Lanka, to Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera, Commander of the Navy.
Enlisting in the Royal Navy in 1935, Schofield served through World War II and was recognized for his contributions, culminating in his role as the Port Signal Officer at the Trincomalee base. His final resting place at sea reflects his enduring connection to a location he cherished.
