M.A. Sumanthiran, former MP and spokesperson for the Ilankai Tamil Arasu Katchi (ITAK), has urged the government to reveal the names of politicians involved in the distribution of liquor licenses during the previous administration. Speaking at a press conference in Colombo, he emphasized the importance of transparency amid rising concerns over the proliferation of liquor stores nationwide.
Sumanthiran called for the immediate release of a list detailing which parliamentarians recommended the opening of these establishments. "The public deserves to know who approved these licenses, especially before the upcoming elections," he said, asserting that those implicated should be excluded from future office.
Highlighting the social issues associated with increased liquor outlets, he expressed concern about their impact on the younger generation. Sumanthiran claimed there are allegations that some individuals profited from selling liquor permits and called for accountability.
He also criticized the excessive perks granted to parliamentarians, deeming them inappropriate during the current economic crisis. "Our full support will be behind reducing these benefits," he said.
In addition to these issues, Sumanthiran discussed his party's nominations for the upcoming general elections, aiming to introduce new, young faces and encourage more women candidates.
