The Central Province Governor, Prof. S.B.S. Abayakoon, has authorized the immediate renaming of 'Keheliya Rambukwella Primary School' in the Kundasale Division of the Wattegama Education Zone. The school will now be known as Kundasale Royal Primary School.
This decision follows public outcry and requests to eliminate the names of politicians associated with corruption from local schools. The move comes after the controversial involvement of Keheliya Rambukwella in the immunoglobulin procurement scandal raised concerns about the appropriateness of his name being attached to an educational institution.
In addition to this change, the Governor has ordered similar renaming actions for schools in the Minipe Education Zone, Teldeniya.
Ceylon Teachers' Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin highlighted that a 1996 circular from the Ministry of Education prohibits naming schools after living individuals, reinforcing the appropriateness of the Governor's decision.
