The Ministry of Health has officially launched a special measles vaccination program which will run from today till November 9, 2024. This program is implemented in 12 selected districts across the country.
Although Sri Lanka has successfully eradicated measles in the past, this program is a response to recent cases reported in some areas. Dr. Hasitha Thisera, senior epidemiologist at the ministry's epidemiology department, emphasized that the focus is on the younger generation, especially those who have not been vaccinated or missed doses for various reasons.
Dr. Thisera noted the importance of ensuring that individuals are fully vaccinated, including those who received only one dose. "The main goal is to provide measles protection. We have made significant progress in measles control in the last 10-20 years, but if the virus re-enters our community, unvaccinated people face greater risk," he said. The aim of this program is to minimize that risk and secure public health.
