Mahaweli Development and Environment Deputy Minister Wasantha Aluvihare said that work of Uma Oya Multi-purpose Project has been stopped temporarily.

He made this disclosure at a special discussion held yesterday.

This decision was taken after considering several complaints received with regards to the project.

The project plan includes the construction of two reservoirs on Uma Oya in the Central Highlands. Generation of electricity and supplying water to Hambantota area are the main objectives of the project. The Uma Oya is to be connected to the Kirindi Oya by a tunnel.
