Days after the Northern Provincial Council of Sri Lanka adopted a resolution demanding an international probe into the “genocide” of the Tamil community, DMK president M. Karunanidhi urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to ensure that India adopted a resolution against the island nation in the U.N. Human Rights Council.

In a letter to Modi, Karunanidhi said while many promises were made by the new President Maitripala Sirisena, nothing has been implemented, The Hindu reported.

The Sri Lankan Army had continued its presence in the Tamil areas despite assurances that it would be withdrawn.

“What can be done in a couple of days has not been done and there are no positive signals towards what should be done within a timeframe,” Karunanidhi pointed out.

He said attempts to probe all atrocities against the Tamils, including war crimes, by an international agency have been thwarted by the Sinhala majority government.

“Now that the Sri Lankan Provincial Government has passed a resolution calling for an international probe into genocide, I request you to kindly consider moving a suitable resolution in the UNHRC,” he said, adding that the committee appointed by the UNHRC to enquire human rights violations by the previous dispensation in Sri Lanka is going to submit a report to the forum next month.
