The Students' Union of the University of Jaffna said that they had no faith in the new government, led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe, when it came to human rights matters.
During a protest that was held out side the university it further said that though the UNHRC had passed several resolutions against Sri Lanka the previous Government had ignored them.
"In a context like this we can't understand why the UNHRC agreed to defer the release of the report from March to September." Students declared.
The protest was unanimously endorsed by Tamil political parties and civil organisations in the North-East. Some even travelled from the Eastern province to take part in the rally.
"Votes from the Tamil people in large numbers for Maithri show their feelings against Mahinda Rajapaksa, we did not expect a difference from the change of power" protesters added.
Current government of Sri Lanka appealed to the UN to delay the UNHRC report so that it could carry out an internal probe to ascertain whether such violations did take place.
The report, which was earlier scheduled to be released on March 25 during the 28th session of the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC), is now to be released in September.
