Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said that the government should investigate the alleged coup attempt on the night after the 2015 presidential election.
Speaking at a rally in Maharagama yesterday afternoon, Dissanayake said that despite its failure, the alleged coup attempt was a dangerous precedent. He said it clearly violates the rights of the people to elect a government they want.
President Maithripala Sirisena can easily forget it since it did not succeed and he became the president. ‘But what if it had succeeded? What would have happened to our country?’ Dissanayake asked.
It was said that the alleged coup was planned to keep former president Mahinda Rajapaksa in power even if he lost the presidential election. A few days ago, Justice Minister Wijedasa Rajapakshe told BBC Sandeshaya that they had known about the alleged coup attempt a week before the election.
