Academic staff of the University of Colombo occupied the Vice Chancellor's and Registrar's offices of the College House, the main administrative centre of the University of Colombo, Federation of University Teachers’ Associations (FUTA) Media Spokesperson Dr. Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri said a short while ago.
“The decision was taken by the Colombo University Federation of Teachers Associations as a part of the protest campaign requesting the Vice Chancellor Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama to resign from his position” Dr. Dewasiri said on his Facebook page.
FUTA had been demanding the resignation of the Vice Chancellor for a long period of time on several reasons. FUTA stated that the appointment was flawed as he was not the most qualified candidate and he had not received the highest number of votes. Furthermore, there was a conflict of interest as his wife Prof. Kshanika Hirimburegama was the then University Grants Commission Chairperson.
FUTA also stated that Dr. Hirimburegama’s conduct in his post as Vice Chancellor was questionable as he had politicized the university.
