Minister of Public Security, Christian Religious Affairs and Disaster Management John Amaratunga told Asian Mirror that the ban on full face helmets which was to be implemented from March 21, is not likely to happen.
“We have received many complaints from public against the decision to ban full face helmets. Everyone says that the ban is extremely unfair when it comes to the safety of motorcyclists” Amaratunga said.
He further said that government hopes to inform relevant authorities about the decision of not to ban full face helmets soon.
The police earlier decided to ban full face helmets with effect from March 21 this year in order to stop crimes and burglaries which were done by people covering their faces using full face helmets.
However that decision was criticized by many parties saying that full face helmets have saved many lives of motorcyclists.
Meanwhile, Bodu Bala Sena recently declared that Police should also ban the burqa, as well as the full face helmets, if they are genuinely concerned about the safety of the citizens.
