Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya yesterday (10) told representatives of political parties that it will take a minimum of three months to introduce a new electoral system.
Addressing a meeting which was held in the parliamentary complex on changing electoral system, the commissioner stressed that the Delimitation Commission must be put into action to change the electoral map according to any changes in electoral system.
During the meeting representatives had come to an agreement that the new electoral system must be a combination of proportional voting system and first-past-the-post system, media reported.
However according to reports Elections Commissioner and political representatives had not come in to a final conclusion about the matter and another meeting will be held on March 18 for further discussion.
