Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake refuted reports that National Executive Council discussed arresting former defence secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Speaking to a local newspaper, Dissanayake said that it was not correct to portray someone’s illusions as decisions of the National Executive Council.
He stressed that the NEC was just a political entity.
It does not have any authority to order the arrest of even an ordinary citizen, let alone a former defense secretary, Dissanayake pointed out.
The JVP leader added that such arbitrary arrests had taken place in the past. But it should never happen under the present administration, he stressed.
Local media recently reported that the NEC had recommended the arrest of Gotabaya Rajapaksa over the Avant-Garde floating armory case.
