President Maithripala Sirisena called for a special Cabinet meeting for this afternoon, local media reports said.
The meeting was convened to discuss the constitutional amendments that are to be implemented.
The Cabinet of Ministers will also discuss the new electoral system and the forthcoming general election.
The United National Party Working Committee recently decided that the election should be held after April 23, following the conclusion of the 100 Days Program.
Meanwhile, the SLFP, which has a majority in the parliament, has made it clear that it will not support hurried constitutional amendments. Both executive presidency and the electoral system have to be changed simultaneously, SLFP also said.
The government has to obtain the support of the SLFP to pass constitutional amendments as it needs the 2/3 majority in the parliament.
