Opposition Leader Nimal Siripala de Silva stated that he will be requesting a parliamentary debate over the controversial Treasury bond issue by Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
Speaking to a local media station, de Silva added that the committee named by the Prime Minister to investigate the allegations is also unacceptable.
Governor of Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran is alleged to have been involved in an insider dealing during the issue of Treasury bonds. It is alleged that a company connected to his son-in-law profited in the deal.
De Silva made it clear that Mahendran should resign from his post as Central Bank Governor.
He pointed out that the three member committee appointed to investigate the allegation is led by an Attorney-at-Law with connections to the United National Party. Therefore, this committee is not acceptable, de Silva explained.
The Opposition Leader stressed that he will speak on the issue when parliament convenes tomorrow (17) and added that he will demand a one day debate over the incident.
Furthermore, the opposition will launch protests to make the people aware of the incident, he said.
Meanwhile, it is learned that Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will make a special statement on the Treasury bond issue tomorrow (17) in parliament.
