Gazette Notification pertaining to the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was printed and published a day before it was supposed to be printed.
Cabinet approval was given for the draft bill on Sunday (15) and Cabinet Spokesperson Dr. Rajitha Senaratne told media that it will be printed and published at midnight on Sunday. However, the notification was not printed at the time as expected.
The notification was published at midnight on Monday (16).
The 19th Amendment is expected to remove arbitrary powers of the president. However, it does not totally abolish the executive presidency as some of his powers will remain. The president will continue to be the Head of Government as well as Head of State.
The Amendment has also limited the Cabinet of Ministers to 30.
The Parliament is to debate the 19th Amendment in the near future.
