Former Army Commander General Sarath Fonseka confirmed that he will be appointed a Field Marshal in the near future.
Speaking to CNN-IBN, Fonseka stated that there were certain moves taking place at the time and he is supposed to be appointed “in a couple of days’ time.”
There had been speculation for some time on his appointment as a Field Marshal on March 22. However, no official confirmation had been made by the Army.
General Sarath Fonseka was the Army Commander from December 2005 to July 2009. He led the Sri Lanka Army during the latter part of the war against the LTTE.
In the CNN-IBN interview, General Fonseka refuted allegations of war crimes, adding that “the army as a whole did not commit war crimes.” However, he said that he is ready to face any inquiry and added that it should not be one sided. “They should listen to our side of the story” he said.
